The inside of the card is blank, and the recipe is on the back. Send a note and a recipe!

We worked with the National Gallery of Art, Washington, to make a portfolio of cards reproducing a full view and three details of their oil on canvas painting The Square of Saint Mark's, Venice. The view of the Piazza San Marco and the cathedral was painted by Canaletto (Italian, 1697-1768), in 1742/44.

Galison's portfolio holds three cards each of four image/recipe combinations. All recipes are by Roberta L. Dowling, CCP, The Cambridge School of Culinary Arts.

  • The view showing the entrance of the Basica San Marco, complete with the four bronze horses brought from Constantinople in the 13th century, and vendor tables and umbrellas in the foreground has a recipe for Risotto Veneziano.
  • A closeup of well-dressed Venetians in front of three vendor tables with the arcade of the Piazetta in the background has a recipe for Zaleti--traditional Venetian cookies)
  • A horizontal view of the corner of the Piazetta with the lagoon in the background and shows the lion of St. Mark on a pedestal. It has a recipe for Duck in Piquant Sauce.
  • The reproduction of the complete painting has a recipe for Marinated Fillet of Sole with Raisins and Pine Nuts.

  • Twelve 4-3/8 x 5-3/4" cards, 12 envelopes
  • 3 cards each of 4 images/recipes
