Galison's Holly Noel Christmas card is based on an illustration by Henri Louis Duhamel du Monceau (1700-1782) of a type of holiday, "Ilex Maderiensis", which could be grown outdoors. The plate was published in Traite des arbres et arbustes que l'on cultive en France en pleine terre, Volume 1, plate 2. The second edition was published in Paris by Didot et al 1800-1819 and now in the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
Our designers applied a decorative background of handwriting in English and a filligree border, plus the gold "NOEL" on a red background.
