A red-bordered card shows "La Rose Marie-Louise", a butterfly, and quotes from a French text on the back. A sunny yellow-framed card shows a daisies, poppies, sunflowers, and a hydrangea, and a bird,with French text about the sunflower (tournesol) on the back. A green-framed card shows red zinnias, clematis, a colorful bird, and other plants with information in french about how the zinnias hale from Louisiana. Salmon-colored cards show a pink hyacinth and butterfly with a French text on the back to the effect that for moralists and poets, a butterfly is the symbol of lightness and transience, but for naturalists, it is a perfect insect.
The botanical illustrations are based on nineteenth century French books from the collection of the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation at the Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania:
