PRICE: $12.00
Van Gogh started painting sunflowers in Paris in 1887. The next August, after he had moved to Arles in southern France, he painted brighter versions and even decorated a guest bedroom for Paul Gaugin with several sunflower paintings.
Galison's Sunflowers museum puzzle reproduces a detail of one of the earliest in the Arles series. The bright yellows of this painting were made possible by the availablity of vibrant new pigments such as chrome yellow.
In a letter to his brother Theo, van Gogh noted that "the sunflower is mine in a way."
