Message: Peace
Artist: Kawase Hasui
Kawase Hasui's Miyajima Shrine in Snow was commissioned by the Pacific Transport Lines company as a calendar illustration in 1935. He chose to show his subject--the noh stage and the torii gate of the Itsukushimi Shinto Shrine--in the falling snow.
The buildings are built on pier-like structures in the bay off the island of Miyajima ("Shrine Island"), which is in the prefecture of Hiroshima. Although the shrine was established in the sixth century, the current gate is from 1875. The area is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the buildings are Japanese National Treasures.
Send a greeting of "Peace" with these unusual holiday cards. They reproduce a print given by James Michener to the Honolulu Academy of Art.
